Maybe or maybe not.. SAT is one of the criteria in having a scholarship in a US University. Well, Don't be nervous, I'm in Yale and be confident. Don't let that one thing in your way as you succeed to your future :)

Each university and the course has different score requirement, so you will have to check. I would say that anything above 1600 is a pretty decent score. If you think that you are missing on alot of universities because of the score you can try taking SAT again. For SAT preparation you can try examville.com. It has lot of timed practice questions and other useful aids. Hope this helps.

It all really depends on the college you apply to; if you want to get a lot of scholarships it would probably be a smarter idea to apply to a less diverse school, or one with a low population of students from India, as they'll likely be trying to up their student diversity at the time, and you might be able to find some sort of scholarship open just for being a minority (by US standards). You could also find out if there are any sponsored scholarships available; usually these involve you entering an essay on an assigned topic. It's more work, but can make a big difference. These likely won't be listed on school websites though, so you'll have to go out of your way a bit more to find them. One thing that schools will put a lot of stress on is your overall grades through primary school, class ranking, financial status, family history, extracurricular activities, and course load. If possible, I would retake the SATs if I were you. And apply for a lot of scholarships; there will be more available for private colleges versus public ones, but the private are also altogether more expensive. It would be in your best interest to get as many scholarships as possible in a few schools that you'd like to go to, and see which one is cheaper with all of them factored in. Sometimes a private college can end up costing less because of scholarships than a public one. I hope any of that was of use... Good luck!!
