I have a US Student visa and I will travel to India via UK. Do I need any type of UK visa during my transit?
I will travel to India via UK. I have a valid US Student visa. My flights are 10hrs apart. I want to enter London and have a day trip. What type of visa do I need, if I need at all? Thanks..

Indian National do require a transit visa for UK, refer to DATV list of the Uk Border Agency.

Whether you will be granted leave to remain for 24 hours depends on the discretion of the UK Border Agency Officer. India is on the list of Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) nationals which even require a visa if they stay within the International Airport of a British airport. .. http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/doineedvisa/visadatvnationals .. This visa requirement is however exempted under certain circumstances; one of these is holding a valid U.S. visa and a flight ticket. Based on this exemption you may be granted a 24 hours visa free transit. ..http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/inf20transit#Q6 .. A transit without visa is in general granted if a passenger arrives at another London airport than he/she departs from. Since your purpose of stay is not transit but tourist visit the Border Agency Officer may either grants you to leave the airport as an exception or deny your request since there is no actual need for it and you may stay in the transit zone. Just give it a try! I would not go ahead and apply for a visitors visa in advance; £46 for just a couple of hours is a waste of money.
